Transformation of the load profile of household consumers in Ukraine after the restoration of power supply as a result of the massive deployment of energy storage facilities
Summary: The article analyzes the impact of the massive use of domestic energy storage on the load profile of the power grid in Ukraine after the power is restored. It has been shown that the classic model of a sharp increase in power consumption after a break, referred to as a cold load pickup, does not take into account the simultaneous charging of batteries or user behavior. As a result, the so-called „charging avalanche” occurs, i.e. a long-term, multi-phase overload of the grid, the maximum of which may occur only several minutes after the power is turned back on. On the basis of the measurements carried out, the phase of rapid load increase, the achievement of the delayed maximum, the point of a clear change in the nature of the mileage and the long-term period of gradual decrease in power consumption were distinguished. In summary, it is indicated that this phenomenon can lead to overheating of transformers and cables, undesirable protection actions, as well as to subsequent power outages. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt load models, protection automation settings and network monitoring methods to the growing share of distributed energy storage.
